Eurasia Programme hosts an annual international conference on Caspian energy and politics at the University of Cambridge . Prominent politicians, leading business executives, and delegates from a score of countries discuss the geopolitics and business developments in the Caspian basin. Annual conferences have been held since 2002.

“Economic Development and Geopolitics in the Caspian Region” was the theme of the third annual conference in 16-18 September 2004. The conference brought together an impressive panel of speakers and delegates from the region and internationally. Distinguished speakers included H. E. Nino Burjanadze, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, H. E. Mehmet Hilmi Guler, Turkish Energy Minister, Ambassador Steven Mann, US Senior Advisor for Eurasia and US Co-Chairman of the Minsk Group for the Karabakh negotiations. High level business executives and industry representatives, including CITIC of China , BP, Alcatel, Petrobras, and others, took part in stimulating discussions.

The conference provided a valuable forum for the presentation and analysis of critical issues facing this energy-rich region. Topics included oil explorations, potential reserves of energy resources, pipeline projects , integration of gas supplies , growing US and European Union interest inenergy imports from the region, Russian interests and transport routes, and prospects of future investments.
